The uptempo song is another step towards El Alimento, the Cuban artist’s new album, scheduled for October 8.
Recently named by Billboard as a “Top 10 Latin Artist to watch,” Cimafunk has been turning Cuba upside down over the past years. The artist has created a movement in Havana and throughout the island, selling out venues with thousands of fans excited to dance to his Afro-Cuban funk blend. His name refers to his heritage as a “cimarrón,” Cubans of African descent who resisted and escaped slavery, chiming with the rhythmic innovation and subversion in his music. His latest project, Terapia, allowed him to travel around the world and participate in Cuba’s impressive musical outreach.
Following “Funk aspirin,” his latest single with George Clinton, the singer is back with new visuals featuring Grammy-award-winning American rapper Lupe Fiasco. “Rómpelo” fuses Cimafunk’s trademark AfroCuban sound and vocals with global hip hop, a powerful combination. The highly colorful video is above all an expression of joy. In addition to Cimafunk’s dance moves and Lupe’s contagious smile, it features scenes of beach sports, paintball, poolside fun and partying.
This new song is taken from his forthcoming album El Alimento, which will also feature local as well as international artists such as CeeLo Green, ChocQuibTown, Stylo G, Chucho Valdés, El Micha and Los Papines. The project was produced by Jack Splash, who called the result of El Alimento “fearless,” stressing that his approach to the music “breaks down lots of musical boundaries.”
El Alimento by Cimafunk, out on October 8.
